FUNDADOR DO ELEVADOR, SENHOR DE BRAGA E DO BOM JESUS

RESUMO: Decorridos cento e vinte anos da morte de um dos maiores empresários da segunda metade do século XIX, procuramos homenagear o fundador do Ascensor do Bom Jesus do Monte, um bem patrimonial com valor universal, e, sobretudo, lançar mais luz sobre a vida e a obra de Manuel Joaquim Gomes, no âmbito histórico, cultural e económico.
A sua ligação e devoção ao Bom Jesus era muito estreita e empática, pois o contexto de onde se vem e no qual se cresce influi naquilo em que se converterá como pessoa. Desde pequeno se habituou a fazer o trajeto do Bom Jesus para Braga, para se deslocar para o trabalho, sempre atento aos detalhes, sabendo captar o bucolismo da paisagem, a atmosfera do lugar e o rasto dos peregrinos da estância.
Além de criador do funicular, o mais longevo a nível mundial quanto ao seu modo de funcionamento por contrapeso de água, foi o impulsionador dos transportes ferroviários em Braga. A partir desta cidade exportou toda a tecnologia e experiência e participou ativamente na instalação da «Companhia dos Ascensores Mecânicos», para exploração e construção dos elevadores nas colinas de Lisboa.
Também deixou a sua marca de homem público, de grande empreendedor e dinâmico empresário em outras áreas de atividade: como acionista e diretor da fábrica de Ruães, na atividade bancária e panificação, na indústria hoteleira, na exploração e certificação das águas do Gerês e como vereador da câmara municipal.

ABSTRACT: One hundred and twenty years have passed after the death of one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the second half of the nineteenth century, so today we seek to honour the founder of the Lift of Bom Jesus do Monte, an asset with universal value, and above all, shed more light on the life and work of Manuel Joaquim Gomes, in the historical, cultural and economic context.
His connection and devotion to Bom Jesus was very close and empathetic, since the context of where one comes from and where one grows influences in what you will become as a person. Since little boy, he is accustomed to make the path Bom Jesus - Braga, to go to work, always attentive to detail, knowing how to capture the bucolic landscape, the atmosphere of the place and the trail of the pilgrims.
Besides being the Funicular creator, the longest-lived in the world as to its mode of operation for water balance, he promoted the railway transport in Braga. From this city he exported all the technology and experience and actively participated in the installation of «Company of Mechanical Elevators» for the exploration and construction of lifts in the hills of Lisbon.
Also left his mark as a public man, a great entrepreneur and dynamic businessman in other areas of activity: as a shareholder and director of Ruães factory, both in banking and baking, in the hotel industry, in the operation and certification of Gerês waters and as alderman of the town hall.
